Your Image: Communications (Your Message)

Your message is your intentions of your music to the world. It's your legacy.


** I believe as artists, we are put here for a reason: to touch the world and make it a better place through our music. Each artist has a unique gift and message.

**Benita Charles' message: To make music and entertainment that ignite passion in people to change the world. How do they change the world? They change the world by being who they are meant to be (their greatest selves) and by sharing their gifts to the world. (This is why I encourage everyone in the broadcast to live their dreams.)


3 Ways to Communicate Your Message


Today, we discussed how to communicate your message (your legacy) to the world.  

1) Identify your Message

• You must be clear on your intention and what you'd like to communicate to your fans.
• My message: A singer who brings joy and inspire her audience to live their dreams.

 2) Incorporate your message in everything you do

• Whether you are singing, releasing new music or speaking to an audience, your message should always be in the forefront of what you do.
• For example, my original songs incorporate my message of inspiring my audience: We Can Make A Difference, The Freedom Song and Can I touch You There. My daily social media posts are always, inspirational, encouraging and empowering.

3) Share your message to the world

• Continually create new music, books, blogs, motivational speeches and music services.
  
• Write your autobiography (share your musical journey, experience and your life). You never know who will be changed by your life.

As an artist, you will have to communicate to your fans, business executives, venue owners, managers, your family, etc.

3 Keys things you as an artist communicate to the world:

* Your message: Your intentions of your music to the world

* Your music: Your self-expression in music

* Your marketing/promotion: Your promotional materials

3 ways of communicating:

1) Verbal: Your voice/how you speak your words and sentences/your tone of voice
-- Be confident when you speak.

2) Non-Verbal: Your body language - how you sit, stand and your gestures.
-- Be open and approachable to your fans.

3) Written: Ensure your written material is grammatically correct and error free in your marketing materials and social media posts.
--Always use a professional editor with your written content.

3 Ways to Communicate effectively:

1) Speak clearly and look people in the eye when you communicate
-- During interviews and meet and greets with fans.
-- Watch your body language: your words should match your body language.

2) Be authentic/ Be yourself
-- Express yourself freely without being crude or rude
-- Speak with confidence

3) Practice speaking in a mirror
--This will help you see what you look like to others
-- This will help you see what you need to improve on

My Audition Experience

Today, we discussed my recent audition with an event band, Here's I learned from the experience.

I recently had an audition for an event band.  Auditioning is something you have to do in order to obtain paid singing work.

I worked on two new songs I had to learn and I refreshed on an oldie-but-goodie song (a total of 3 songs). I learned the songs, rented a rehearsal studio to practice and rehearsed the songs in my sleep.  However, I almost didn't go to the audition. I didn't feel like I was ready. I didn't like how my voice sounded in rehearsal. I was doubting myself and my abilities.

After going back and forth about going to the audition, I decided to go, despite my doubts and fears, for the experience.  Also, I had worked so hard and spent money on preparing, it would have been shameful to not at least try.

Even up until it was time for me to audition, I was having so much self-doubt, I almost walked out of the audition. I made myself stay.

I auditioned and the song went so well that I got a positive response from the producer of the audition as well as others in the room. It was so encouraging and it made me realize how important it is to always push through your fears and self-doubt and do it anyway. 

It was such a positive experience and I made great contacts. If I had've given into my self-doubts, I would not have gain such a valuable lesson.

I encourage you to push through your fears and pursue your dreams! If you do, you will amaze yourself!!

5 Key Take-Aways:
1) Do your best 
-- Do all the things within your control to prepare (learn the songs, rehearse & build your confidence)

God will do the rest.
-- Once you audition, let it go. It's out of your hands.

2) No matter what happens, see the process through to the end! (Never, ever give up)
-- Don't listen to the negative voice in your head that tells you to give up/don't try/don't show up and leave.

3) Don't focus on the outcome, just do your best and let it go.
-- Focus on the things you can do within your control (preparing for the audition and building your confidence).

4) Celebrate your success.
-- You have to acknowledge the hard work and success that you achieve.

5) Move on and prepare for the next opportunity.
-- You can't rest on your last success. You have to continuously work to keep your talent sharp for the next audition and opportunity.

1) Always look your best at all times

•  When you are out and about, on stage, in a formal interview and even at rehearsals or recording sessions, always look your best.  You never know when a camera will find you or when someone tag you on social media!

2) Be authentic and dress according to your own style and personality

• If you are a trendsetter, classic or bombshell babe, always dress to show your true identity and personal style. You will fell much more confident and look your best if you're authentic.

3) Own the room

•  When you look your best, you feel your best. It's such a confidence booster and all a part of putting your best foot forward!

4 ways to Enhance your Self-Image

1) Take care of yourself

• Take care of your health
• Exercise every day
• Maintain proper rest
• Eat nutritious meals 
• Take care of your voice
• limit shouting and excessive speaking to maintain proper vocal health
• keep your voice covered in cold weather
• always warm up your voice before you sing

2) Continue to learn your craft/work on self improvement

• Rehearsals keeps your talent sharp for any opportunity that may come your way
• The better you are at your craft, the more confidence you will have when you perform

3) Value yourself and your time

• Learn to say no without apology
• Keep your promises to yourself and you'll be able to keep them with others
• Schedule time for yourself for "me time" to unwind and clear your mind for peace of mind.

4) Be nice to yourself

• Give yourself positive self talk

I. Your Appearance

• Your physical appearance is the first thing that people will see of you. As an artist you have to look your best at all times. You will be making live appearances, photographed by the press and attend meet-and-greats with your fans. You never know who you will meet nor when the camera will greet you.

 II. Your Communication

• Your message (Your mission/vision) is what you communicate to the world in everything you do. You must effectively share it properly at all times, whether you are engaging with your fans, interviewing with the media or in all of your marketing and promotions.

 III. Your Behavior

•  Your behavior affects every aspect of your career. If you are late to your performances or don't show up for a scheduled performance, it will have a negative effect on your reputation. You must always be as professional in your career. You will definitely get more work and further advance your career.

The Singing Tips Blog - The Recap Show (Part 2) "Honoring our special guest, Azania Noah 

In this episode, we honored our special guest, Azania Noah who appeared on Tip #22 (Song Topics) on October 15, 2017.

Key points from Azania's speech:

•  Azania started writing poetry before the age of 15. After 15, she began writing songs as a way to express herself and her feelings.

• Azania's debut album, "Rising" took her some time to write but she wanted to get it right and exactly how she wanted it.  Her song, "Looking Ahead" is a song about how time passes fast and that you can't dwell on the past.  You have to make every day count.   She received positive feedback from her fans.

•  Azania offered great suggestions to beginner songwriters: take an online songwriting course or buy a songwriting book to learn the craft of songwriting. Once you get the skill, work on releasing your own music.

• Azania recently founded The Singer Elite Community on Facebook with a membership over 120+ members and it's growing.  It is a community of singers of various levels who network, connect and encourage each other. Release Your Music (Part 1)

*There's a 3 step process to producing your music for release.

1) Pre-Production

• Practice your song and make sure it's performance ready before you record it in the studio.
•  Meet with the producer before the session to go over any questions regarding the music and the arrangement.

2) Production

•  Record your vocals and music and sing from the heart in the vocal booth. 
• The mic picks up any vocal imperfections and emotions.

•  Schedule a separate session for mixing of the music. 
• It takes that long to get the music just right.

• Listen to the song outside of the studio on your headphones or smaller system to hear exactly what the song sounds like. 
• For some reason, everything sounds better in the studio.

• Ensure that you have a good, quality final mix of the song 
• This is very important for mastering process.

 3) Post-Production

•  Ensure that you have a great final mix of the song 

• This includes but not limited to equalization,and audio level compression and limiting.
• Ensure the music and vocals are evenly leveled throughout the song)

• Always master your song
• Make sure you have a good final mix of the song. This is very important for the mastering process.
• Mastering the song takes the song to another level and gives it the "radio ready" quality to the sound.
• The master is the source that you will give the manufacturing company (like Discmakers) to make copies of your CD for purchase.
• Hire a graphic designer to design the CD cover and liner notes
• You can use a service like fivrr.com to find a good designer at a good price.
• Submit the design and master to a duplication company (such as Discmakers) for copies of your music
• Once you do all those things, your music is ready for purchase!
  

 Bonus tips (repeated for further emphasis):

Make sure your song is performance ready(fully written, well rehearsed and emotionally connected to the song) before you record the final vocals in the studio.

• Time is money in the studio and you can waste both if you're not prepared.

Always...always...always master your song!! 

•  If not mastered, the copies of the CD will not sound professional.
• I stress: make sure your final mix is exactly what you want. If not, it will not be able to be corrected during the mastering process.

Working with a producer

*A producer is a person who creates and oversees the music and music production in the recording process.

1) Find the right producer.

• One of the best ways to find a producer is through referrals (through other musicians).

• Studios can be a great resources since that's where producers work.

• Another resource is the Association of Music Producers (AMP). They have an online directory of members.

2) Discuss what type of business arrangement you are entering in before any work begins. 

•  Decide if this will be a work for hire or if the producer will have a portion of ownership of the song.

•  It's best to have a contract of your agreement with the producer.

• Always let your attorney review every contract before you sign it. It's very important to understand what you are signing. 

 3) Establish a good working relationship with the producer.

• A good producer will get to know you and try to bring out your best qualities and your source of emotion and expressions to create the best recording process.
• There has to be mutual respect and trust in order for the relationship to work.
• A good producer will have a good ear to hear when things are off and not sounding the best

Bonus tip:

Make sure your song is complete (fully written and well rehearsed) before you work with the producer and go to the studio.

• Time is money in the studio and you can waste both if you're not prepared

Songwriting 101 (Part 5): Protect Your Work (Copyright it!)

Here are the key reasons why you should copyright your work:

1) You will have legal protection against theft and unlawful use of your work if you copyright your work. Should you have to go to court, your copyright is your legal proof that you are the owner of your song.

2) As the copyright owner, you have full use of the song.  You can record it, perform it live and license it for a fee for other to use it. You will receive compensation for all the ways you use your song.

3)The poor man's copyright is to mail a copy of your song to yourself.  However, it won't hold up in court. Only, the legal copyright through the US Library of Congress will the court recognize as your proof of ownership. It's good to do when you're in a pinch. However, it's best to always register your songs through the US Library of Congress to fully protect your songs.

4)Register your songs through the US Library of Congress. To register your songs, visit: http://copyright.gov.  You will use the PA Form (for unpublished songs you write with music and lyrics). You will use for SR Form (for recorded songs with words and music). If you register online, it's cheaper than using the standard mailing process.  Check the website for appropriate fees for both.

Bonus tip: It's best to copyright your songs as you create them.  This way you will have your copyright in the same year you created it. Also, you avoid the risk of your work been stolen.

Songwriting 101 (Part 4): How to Conquer Writer's Block

Here are the 3 key ways to conquer writer's block:

1) Step away from the song and do something else
-Sometimes it helps to put the song down and do something else.  When you come back to the song, you'll have a fresh perspective.
-Record the song first before you put it away. This way, when you come back to it, you'll hear what you worked on and it will give you new ideas for the song.

2) Keep writing until you can't write any more.
-When you return to the song again from your break, keep writing. Even if you don't like what you write, write it anyway.  You can always edit it later.  The most important thing is to write it out and get it out of your head.  This is called, free form writing.
-There's a wealth of information from your free form writing, perhaps another song.

3) Establish a writing schedule
-It's helpful if you have a set day and time for your writing. Set aside a certain block of time where you will focus and concentrate on your song. 
-Remove distractions and find a comfortable space of your choice where you can write your songs.

Finally, study your favorite hit songs. What works for the song? What's the most memorable? Why do you like it? Take what you like and kind your own style.  Good luck with your songwriting and your hit song!

Songwriting (101): Elements of a Hit Song (Part 3)

Here are the key elements of a hit song:
1) Song Title
- A catchy song time or a simple song title
examples:
Hello by Adele and Hello by Lionel Richie (simple title)
Take This Job and Shove It (intriguing)
Cats In A Cradle (Artistic)

2) Lyrics (words)
- The right lyrics can touch your heart and bring back memories.
- The right topic can strike a chord with your audience.
- The way the words are arranged can make a huge difference. A good rhyming scheme can make a huge difference.

3) Music (melody and harmony)
- The right music can touch your emotions.
- A beautiful melody can be momerable.
- A musical riff can be memorable.
- Examples: Sweet Caroline (memorable musical riff) and Uptown Funk (horn arrangement).

4) Song Arrangement
- The right arrangement can take a song in a fresh direction.
- The late, great Luther Vandross was a master at taking a cover song and making it his own with his unique song arrangements.
- Poker Face by Lady Gaga was revamped broadway style via the hit TV show, Glee.

5) Timing/Luck (magic)
-The right time a song comes out is just as important as the song itself.
-Sometimes if it's too radical for the times, people may not get it and the song won't do very well. Years later, the same type of songs will do very well. This is something out of your control.  If you're lucky enough to have a hit song, consider yourself blessed (even if it's a one hit wonder).

Here's a formula to keep in mind when writing your hit song from the book, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Songwriting by Joel Hirschhorn.

Songwriting 101 (Part 2): Music & Lyrics

Today, we discussed music and lyrics - the heart of the song. I shared my songwriting process. 

1) What's the most important part of the song - music or lyrics? Both! Lyrics can bring back memories and music touches your emotions. Together, it's magic!

2) My songwriting process: When I'm inspired to write, sometimes I get the music & melody first then I write the lyrics.  There are also times when I get both. Most of the times, I get the chorus (hook) first and then I build the song around the hook.

Today, I shared a story that has inspired my present song I'm working on now, titled "No - No More!".  I had an experience where someone was very rude and intrusive with me but the worst part was I allowed it and didn't check that person.  Afterwards, I was so angry but mostly with myself because I was caught off guard and did not handle it properly. I have since forgiven myself but I'm writing a great song out of the experience!

3) Keep your lyrical idea in the same direction and make sure the music supports it.

Songwriting: Song Structure
Today, we discussed song structure. I prefer the popular 32-bar structure: A B C A

A= Verse 1 (8 bars)
B= Verse 2 (8 bars)
C= Bride    (8 bars)
A= Chorus vamps to end (*hook) - 8 bars

*The hook is usually the chorus of a song, it's repetitive throughout the song and it's catchy (memorable & favorable)

Other structures:

A B A (no bridge) - only 2 verses and 2 choruses

A B (1 verse) 1 verse & chorus (hook)

Some people talk first then start the song

Another version is to start with the chorus (hook) first and go into the verses

*The sky's the limit as to how you can construct your song.

Tips on song structure:

• Study your favorite songs to see how they are constructed
• Research with songwriting books
• Find a form that works for the message of your song

Today, is a special show because I had a special guest, international recording artist/performer/singing teacher, Azania Noah.  Azania was kind enough to share her songwriting process and the inspiration behind her original music on her CD, Rising!

Originally from Sierra Leone, West Africa, this award-winning, multi-cultural artist was born and raised in the U.S. & in Switzerland. Azania Noah’s captivating voice, powerful energy and lovely charisma make her a phenomenal performer and a joy to see on stage. She has performed over 800 concerts around Europe, the U.S., Africa and in Asia. She is just as comfortable in major music festivals, such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, as she is singing for Presidents and politicians such as the U.K.’s Tony Blair. In Paris, she won first prize in the French T.V. competition “Graines de Star” which was the first French show similar to ‘American Idol’. She also recently featured on the famous TV show “The Voice” in France (TF1 TV) seen by over 8 million viewers internationally. • A set list allows everyone to know which songs are presented and in the order of the show

• A set list should be flexible enough to change depending on the flow of the show

When I first moved to New York in 1996, I met a man named Chad Pilieri from an indie rock band called "All About Chad." He said something to me that I will always remember. He told me that I should write and record my own songs. Then, he gave me his CD, "Down In Front," released in 1995. At the time, I didn't know much about that aspect of the music business so I didn't do anything with his advice until years later.  Eventually, I released my own CD (Moments In Love: Volume 1) on my label Star Entertainment New York. Looking back I realize that his advice was invaluable! I still have his CD to this day.  Sadly, I learned his group disbanded.

All About Chad, the band (indie rock/alternative)

Indie pop quartet All About Chad featured guitarist Asif Chaudhri, singer Ben Reiser, bassist Chad Pilieri, and drummer Jason Schreiber. After the release of the "Chad's Very First Record" single on Jeezus Peezus Records in 1991, the Brooklyn band set out to record their debut full-length. This That & the Other Thing was released in 1989, and was followed by 1991's The Scouting Party. 1992 saw the unveiling of the quirky Jelly Slide EP. They continued in 1993 with the "Chad's Got an Earring" single on It's Only Pop Music Records. Big Pop Records released the band's swan song, Down in Front, in 1995. Recorded and produced by the band, the disc showcased the band's endearing brand of indie pop music. The group called it quits soon after, but not before an impressive appearance on March Records' stellar Pop American Style compilation in 1996 with the catchy "Japanese Couple in Reverse." ~ Stephen Cramer, Rovi
